Filing taxes for illegal income

Apparently the IRS gives out ITIN to all undocumented immigrants, and does not share any of their tax filing information with immigration authorities.

Also, it is illegal for criminals to not file returns on their illegal income (lol). Just wondering if a criminal (not arrested yet) filed returns for their illegal income, would IRS share this information with law enforcement, thus leading to their arrest?

Was just wondering if there is any precedent of criminals getting caught as a result of filing their taxes correctly.

Not that I’m aware of. OTOH, do you really think the Department of Homeland Security or NSA doesn’t have access to everything from every federal agency? Agencies generally don’t intrude on each other’s legal venue and I don’t believe there is ununofficial quid pro quo going on unless the White House wants to make an example out of someone (usually journalists).
